DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – It’s been an especially violent day in Detroit.

Six people have been killed and nine shot during a 24-hour period in the city. This round of violence began early Thursday morning and extended into Friday. Of the half-dozen homicides, five were from gunshot wounds and the sixth was from a fatal beating.

Among these incidents: Detroit police said, early Friday morning, four men were shot and two were killed while walking on Grand near the Davison.

Thursday afternoon a woman and a man were shot in broad daylight near Hayes and Wade on the city’s east side. The woman was critically injured.  Police are looking for a black 20-year-old male in that case.

Thursday morning, four men were shot,  two of them fatally, on Grand Street near the Lodge Freeway and the Davison on west side; and in a separate incident, a man was found dead, shot and burned inside of a freightliner truck on Junction near McGraw — also on the west side.

Despite the recent outburst, homicides are down in Detroit.

Talking to WWJ’s Russ McNamara, Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody confirmed that there have been 131 murders this year to date in the city. That’s a decline from 150 homicides at the same time in 2013.

Anyone with information on the crimes listed above is encouraged to call Detroit Police Criminal Investigations at 313-596-1420 or  Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
