Uber Delivers On Demand Ice Cream Treats [VIDEO]

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - With the push of a button Friday on the Uber app, ice cream lovers around Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor received the frozen treat delivered right to their door.

The smart phone app-based transportation company expanded beyond its traditional on-demand ride service to offer the ice cream delivery service.

For just $20, ice cream trucks and specially outfitted Uber X private cars delivered Michigan-made ice cream treats from  Eskimo Jacks or Treat Dreams.

"We are delighting all the people of metro Detroit with a opportunity to request ice cream on-demand using their Uber app," said Mike White, general manager for Uber Detroit. "It is very seamless, easy and really a delightful experience for summer."

Uber locations around the world took part in the ice cream delivery promotion, with nearly 250,000 treats expected to be delivered worldwide.

"It is a great opportunity to have both brands together," said Josh Charlip, founder and president of Eskimo Jack, who delivered freshly made ice cream sandwiches in downtown Detroit.

"This is a nice perk that we could have ice cream delivered on a hot summer day," said Kelly Lavaute, who works in downtown Detroit.

Following the six-hour promotion, Uber and their ice cream partners delivered treats to the Ronald McDonald House in Detroit.
