Sheriff's Officials: Child Pulled From Car Before Man Shoots Self In Rochester Hills

ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - Oakland County Sheriff's officials are investigating after a man led them on a short chase before killing himself in a car in Rochester Hills.

John R was closed at Auburn Road for hours following the incident that began around noon Friday when deputies responded to a report of a "suspicious vehicle" behind a house on the 1400 block of John R.

When they arrived on scene, they observed a black Ford Taurus in the lot behind the house. When deputies approached the vehicle, it left at a high rate of speed. The vehicle left south on John R. and deputies pursued with lights and sirens activated before losing sight on the car.

A short time later, deputies located the car in the area John R. and South Blvd. near.

When they approached to investigate, deputies said, they noticed a visibly upset man with a gun in his lap. The officers talked with him for over an hour and were able to secure the release of a 5-year-old boy sitting in the back seat.

Shortly after the child was pulled from the vehicle, the man shot and killed himself, deputies said.

Authorities are trying to identify the child and determine relationship to the man.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Troy Police Department and Rochester Hills Fire Department.

The man's name was not released.
