St. Clair Shores Woman Accused Of Dismembering Son Heads To Trial
ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ/AP) - A St. Clair Shores woman charged with killing and dismembering her adult son has been found mentally competent to stand trial.
Donna Scrivo, 60, appeared in court Friday, where attorneys said psychological evaluations deemed her mentally competent. She waived a District Court hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to send the case to trial.
Defense lawyer Elias Muawad told the Detroit Free Press "we want to move on to prepare for trial."
The next hearing is scheduled Sept. 22 in Macomb County Circuit Court.
Five bags containing 32-year-old Ramsay Scrivo's body parts were dumped in February in rural St. Clair County, off I-94, about 50 miles northeast of Detroit.
An electric saw was found in one of the bags.
Scrivo is charged with first-degree murder and dismemberment.
Prosecutors say Donna Scrivo filed a missing person's report Jan. 27, reporting that her son left his St. Clair Shores home and failed to return. Three days later, someone reported seeing a woman dumping trash bags from an SUV in China and St. Clair townships.
She was arrested Feb. 1.
Friends were stunned by the charges, saying Donna Scrivo loved and doted on her son.
Macomb County Probate Judge Carl Marlinga told the Associated Press that Donna Scrivo was named her son's legal guardian because of his severe mental illness.
Marlinga said Scrivo had petitioned the probate court last May for "temporary guardianship on an emergency basis because her son was suicidal and despondent over the illness of his father" who later died. Marlinga said doctors determined that Ramsey Scrivo had "psychosis and that he was a danger to himself."
