EAA Board Narrows Field Of Candidates To Fill Chancellor Seat

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit's Educational Achievement Authority (EAA) met Wednesday to discuss the selection of a new chancellor but put the brakes on making that decision immediately.

Most board members connected via conference call and narrowed the field down to two finalists reports WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas.

The top two candidates are Carlton Jenkins of Saginaw Public Schools Superintendent and current DEAA interim chancellor Veronica Conforme.

Board member Shirley Stancato was the first concern about the process:

"It's just moving so quickly, and we had an opportunity to spend an hour with them," said Standkato. "I feel that it's really important that we provide another opportunity key stake holders and other board members to actually have that face-to-face."

Joyce Haynes Giles and Stancato both put Jenkins as the stronger candidate at this point.

"If we looked at the candidates there were four good ones but I was hoping that we would be close and we were right there," said Giles.

Chancellor John Covington resigned in June with one year remaining on his contract.

The EAA was created during the Snyder administration as an authority which would take over Detroit's lowest performing public schools.
