Police: Counterfeit Cash Cropping Up In Nearby State

TOLEDO (WWJ/AP) - Police in Toledo are warning residents and businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money. Authorities say a store on the city's east side received at least three fake bills last week.

What's unusual, they say, is that the bills being passed are in five-dollar denominations -- which most clerks don't check for authenticity.

The fake bills have been turned over to the Secret Service, but police say before accepting change from a store, ensure the bills have a safety strip, watermarks and also feels like real money.

So far, there's been no word of any counterfeit money being circulated here in metro Detroit ... but it pays to be aware.
