Prep Football Star Jayru Campbell Appears In Court On Latest Charges

DETROIT (CBS Detroit/AP) - A not guilty plea has been entered on a probation violation for embattled Detroit prep football star Jayru Campbell, who's now accused of assaulting a teen girl.

Campbell, 17, had been released from jail just a few hours prior to the alleged assault after serving time for body-slamming a security officer in a hallway at Cass Technical High School, where he was the star quarterback.  The confrontation was recorded on video.

Campbell made a brief court appearance Tuesday morning in Wayne County Circuit Court on a probation violation case. A not guilty plea was entered, and a judge set a hearing Sept. 26 in that case.

Prosecutors have charged Campbell with assault and unarmed robbery in connection with the latest incident, last Friday, also at Cass Tech. They say Campbell assaulted a 17-year-old female student after she wouldn't allow him to read text messages on her cell phone.

Campbell was sentenced in May to 60 days in jail after he admitted he slammed the officer head-first on Jan. 22.

Campbell's record could have been expunged under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act if he met certain terms, such as attending counseling and anger management classes, passing drug tests and completing 75 hours of community service. It was not immediately clear how these latest charges might impact his eligibility.

Campbell led Cass Tech to state championships in 2011 and 2012.

He had verbally committed to play for Michigan State University prior to the body slamming incident, but later changed his mind.
