Dave Brandon: 'It's One Of The Embarrassing Communication Gaffes That Occurred'

ANN ARBOR (CBS DETROIT) - From the hit on Shane Morris in Saturday's game to the Brady Hoke Monday afternoon press conference - the dominoes were falling directly toward University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon.

He's come under fire from students and alumni alike and Brandon addressed Thursday what's next for him and the Wolverines football program.

First of all -- Brandon said he did not see the hit.

"At that particular moment I was up in the West Tower and on my way - on the move - and so - I kind of missed all this," he said.

Saying the vantage point from the sidelines is "one of the worst seats in the house," Brandon told WWJ's Jon Hewett that the focus was on Morris' leg (injury).

"It's one of the embarrassing communication gaffes that occurred - that we fixed and won't occur again."

Brandon was asked if he was surprised about the national attention the hit on Shane Morris received:

"It would have surprised me if I had not, late that evening, heard the broadcast because once I heard about this, I got a copy of the broadcast and the color commentator, I don't even remember who it was ... was, I think, doing some of his own medical diagnosing up in the broadcast booth and I think drew such attention and the hit was played over and over again - so, obviously it became one of those things that really became a focal point from the game and at that point - I wasn't surprised," said Brandon. "Because it was something that was being widely covered and talked about."

Why didn't Hoke know about Shane's medical condition for Monday's press conference?

Brandon said that Hoke had several people communicating with him about Morris - and he went into the press conference repeating the latest information he was given. "He was told Shane had a possible concussion, not a probable concussion."

"What I've learned about this is that it's a very difficult field of medicine, particularly when you are in a contact sport and people are taking blows to the head all the time."

Of the campus rally calling for his firing?

"These are people who have never met me and really don't know who I am and they are frustrated - and I got that and I hear that and I'm disappointed by that," he said.

"There will always be disappointment, fault-finding .. that's the kind of job I'm in - it's become part of the sport, both on the professional level and the college level.  I will never make everyone happy ... with my decisions."

Brandon said he never once thought of resigning this week and he will continue to support Hoke as Michigan's football coach.

"To suddenly go in -- in the middle of the season and start screwing around with leadership and all that is, to me, offensive to those young people," Brandon said. "Those kids deserve every opportunity to have as much success as they can possibly have between now and the end of this football season."

"I don't want to connect the dots between how we are playing and the events surrounding Shane Morris," said Brandon. "Footballs success defines the happiness for a lot of people."
