TROY (WWJ) - A 49-year-old ex-con has been ordered jailed on a $1 million bond after police say he attacked and robbed a 90-year-old man who let him use the bathroom at his home.

Andre Lee Heard was arraigned earlier this week at 52-4 District Court in Troy on charges of armed robbery and larceny of a credit card. He pleaded not guilty and is due back in court on Oct. 13.

According to police, Heard was working on a lawn care job near the victim's home, which he had done in the past, when he asked the elderly man if he could use his bathroom.

The victim told police he was sitting at his kitchen table, going through mail with a metal letter opener, when Heard exited the bathroom and placed a towel over his head. The victim told police that Heard grabbed the letter opener and began to strike him on the head and upper torso while at the same time demanding money.

Police said the victim fought back and in the struggle, the towel came off of his head. At that point, police said Heard forced the man to the floor, removed the wallet from his pants' pocket, took the man's cell phone and ran away from the scene.

Police say the man suffered minor cuts to his head and torso, along with bruising.

Heard was arrested the next day.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Heard was released from jail last December after serving nearly 14-years for home invasion and armed robbery charges in Wayne County.
