CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers will have an opportunity to re-sign free agent designated hitter Victor Martinez, according to the Boston Globe.

"According to a major league source familiar with Martinez: He prefers to work something out with the Tigers, so they will get first crack at him," Nick Cafardo wrote. "If he elects free agency, comfort of the workplace will be extremely important."

Cafardo noted that Martinez may not sign before free agency but that the Tigers hope to get a deal done sooner rather than later.

Martinez had a career year in 2014, belting 32 home runs and nearly winning the American League batting title with an average of .335. He finished the 2014 season with a league-high on-base percentage of .409 and a league-high on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .974.

Now 35 years old, Martinez has hit .300 or better eight of his past nine seasons.
