CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez turned in a career year in 2014, smashing 32 home runs to go along with a .335 batting average and an American League-best on-base percentage of .409.
Now a free agent, Martinez evidently wants to cash in.
Martinez, a five-time All-Star who turns 36 in December, will receive a qualifying offer from the Tigers, according to Jon Heyman of CBS, but will turn it down and seek a four-year deal. Heyman writes the Tigers may not want to sign him for that length of time.
The Tigers gave Martinez a four-year, $52 million deal when he originally came to Detroit. A torn ACL sidelined Martinez in 2012, but in the three seasons he played for the Tigers, Martinez turned in a batting average of .321, hit 58 home runs, batted in 289 runs and recorded 170 walks against 155 strikeouts.
