Iconic Adoba Dearborn Hotel Headed Into Foreclosure

DEARBORN (WWJ) - It's been part of the Dearborn skyline since the late 1970s and is one of Michigan's largest hotels and conference centers. Now, it stands to become one of the region's largest vacancies.

The Adoba Hotel — formerly the Hyatt Regency Dearborn — is expected to close it doors before the stroke of midnight Friday, with over 230 employees losing their jobs.

The hotel owes over $850,000 in property taxes to the Wayne County Treasurer, according to officials. The management company gave notice of its intent to vacate with the property going through foreclosure proceedings.

Suzanne Thomas, the hotel's former associate sales director during the Hyatt days, heard the news Thursday morning and rushed over.

"We had our children while we worked here. This place means so much to us, and just to see it closing is just... it's so sad," she told WWJ's Ron Dewey.

Thomas said the loss will be a big blow to the area and its economy.

"It's a huge part of me personally, but part of Dearborn," she said. "And it's just so sad because there's still so many people here that I know and I care about; and I mean I was lucky that I got out before it all happened. Now I work at a local hotel, heard the news and we're hiring so we're gonna see what I can do to help some of these people find a job."

The management company is in a legal battle of its own with the ownership group. The hotel offers over 70,000 feet of meeting space and 772 rooms.

Thomas said the place could use some "love" and some renovations.

There was no immediate word when or if the hotel will go on the auction block.
