Coast Guard Helicopter Rescues 3 Teens Stranded Off Shore Of Grosse Ile [VIDEO]

GROSSE ILE (WWJ) - The Coast Guard rescued three teens who became stranded off the coast of Grosse Ile due to deteriorating weather conditions Friday evening.

Just after 5 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received a report that three boys had become stranded on Stony Island, in the Detroit River on the east side of Grosse Ile.

Watchstanders made contact with the teens, who reported they had crossed from Grosse Ile to Stony Island in a 12-foot boat and were unable to return because of the worsening weather conditions.

An aircrew aboard a Coast Guard helicopter was already airborne conducting training in the area and diverted to locate the teens. A boat crew also responded from Coast Guard station on Belle Isle, aboard a 45-foot response boat.

The aircrew located the boys and directed the response boat crew to the scene, but they were unable to reach the teens due to the shallow water depth.  Responders determined the safest way to rescue the boys would be via helicopter hoist.

The aircrew safely hoisted all three boys aboard the helicopter and took them to Grosse Ile Airport where they were met by awaiting emergency medical services personnel and their parents.

All three teens were evaluated by EMS and released. Their names were not released.

"Weather conditions on the Great Lakes can quickly deteriorate, especially in the spring and fall," Mike Baron, recreational boating safety specialist for the Coast Guard 9th District in Cleveland, said in a statement. "It is important to check the forecast before you leave and keep an eye out for any changes."

The owner of the 12-foot boat intends to retrieve the vessel when weather permits.
