New Street Lights To Be Installed Near School Where Teen Was Hit By Car

HAMTRAMCK  (WWJ) - Detroit's Public Lighting Authority plans to install brand new street lights near a school where a teenager was struck by a car last week.

Frontier International Academy Assistant Principle Ahmed Ajin says the 16-year-old girl struck by a car in the early morning darkness by a hit and run driver Friday has undergone two surgeries and is scheduled for a third.

It was pitch-black because the street lights were not working -- and Ajin tells WWJ's Vickie Thomas that he has heard that lights will be fixed but has not been given a time frame.

"This is the fourth accident within two months ... it would be one accident every two weeks, this is extremely high," said Ajin.

On Sunday, Daylight Savings had us turning the clocks back an hour so it's lighter earlier as kids make their way to school.

"That's also going to put us in another problem, after school programs," he said, "do not end until 5:30 in the evening and kids are also going to be walking in the dark."

"School has been running for about two months and this is the fourth student that's been involved in a car accident. We just want this to end," Ajin said.

He said many students feel like they will be next.

"We've had two students say that they wanted to protest and to ask the city to install lights."
