Detroit Zoo Flips The Switch On 'Wild Lights' Nov. 22

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - The Detroit Zoo is ready to light up the holidays!

Visitors attending the opening night of Wild Lights at the zoo will be treated to a luminous celebration. The kick-off event -- to be held just inside the admission gates on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. -- will include a tree-lighting ceremony, music, holiday dancers, the zoo's polar bear and penguin mascots, and the jolly ol' elf himself -- Santa Claus.

The opening-night celebration will feature an appearance by singer Karen Newman, who will perform her signature song, "Christmas Eve on Woodward Avenue".

Wild Lights, a spectacular holiday light display, will feature more than five million twinkling LED lights adorning buildings, trees and more than 100 animal sculptures on a trail through the front of the Zoo. A musical light show, ice carving, green tips, arts and crafts, seasonal refreshments, storytelling, carousel rides and the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition will add to the festivities.

The celebration takes place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 22-23 and 28-30; December 5-7, 11-14, 18-23 and 26-31.

Advance tickets are now on sale and cost $8 for ages 2 and up (under 2 admitted free); tickets cost $10 at the gate. Parking is $6 per car.
