Bob Bashara's Mother Testifies In Murder Trial: 'He Was Very Upset'

DETROIT (WWJ) -- The mother of Bob Bashara took the witness stand Wednesday morning in her son's ongoing murder trial.

Bob Bashara's mom, Nancy Bashara, said that her son asked her to put jewelry and coins into their joint safe deposit box and that she never looked in the bag. As was later found out, it was a gun that Bob Bashara allegedly had his mom put in the deposit box.

Bob Bashara, 56, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy and solicitation of murder in the 2012 death of his wife Jane Bashara. Authorities said she was beaten and strangled in the couple's home and then her body left in her car in a Detroit alley.

Joseph Gentz, a handyman who confessed he killed Jane Bashara under Bob Bashara's orders, is in prison for second-degree murder.

The jury was then shown the NBC interview where Bob Bashara professed his love for his wife said that he would never harm a hair on her head and that he did not own a gun.

Nancy Bashara said during the testimony that she received a call from her son on a January night in 2012 saying that he was worried because his wife wasn't home yet.

"He was very upset," Nancy Bashara said. "He said, 'Jane's not home, I don't know where she is,' and I said, 'Bob, she's always on time and she always leaves notes.' I said, 'that's not like Jane' and he said, 'could you come down.' He sounded very upset."

Money was also a focus at the testimony Wednesday -- according to Nancy Bashara, she paid for Jane Bashara's funeral and reception, and that the couple apparently owed her $220,000.
