McDonald's, 7-11 Join Detroit Safety, Security Program

DETROIT (AP) — Two additional businesses have joined a Detroit police program designed to improve safety and security for residents, shoppers and visitors.

The police department says Friday in a release that a McDonald's restaurant on West Grand Boulevard near the Lodge Freeway service drive and a 7-Eleven, just east of downtown on Jefferson Avenue, will display green lights outside their buildings as part of Project Lighthouse.

Both businesses also will display Project Lighthouse logos and banners.

Participating businesses have agreed to provide shelter, assistance, restroom facilities, use of a telephone and safety information to people needing them. Officials say people with serious safety concerns are encouraged to call 911 for help.

Project Lighthouse got its start at a number of downtown businesses, but was expanded in March to Detroit neighborhoods.
