Police Search For Band Of Thieves Impersonating Cops In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Investigators in Detroit are searching the city for a group of suspects who robbed a man while pretending to be police officers.

The incident happened just before 4 a.m. Wednesday near Evanston Street and Chalmers Avenue, just a few blocks north of I-94 on the city's east side.

According to police, a 43-year-old Mount Clemens man was walking down the street when a dark-colored Dodge Charger pulled up and a man wearing all black exited the vehicle.

The victim told investigators the man identified himself as a police officer before patting him down. The man then allegedly pointed to his waistband to imply he was armed, police said, before robbing the victim of his wallet and cell phone.

The man got back into the vehicle, which then fled westbound on I-94. The victim was uninjured.

The victim told police there were at least three other occupants in the car, one who looked as young as 15-years-old.

The main suspect is described as a black male in his 20s with a dark complexion, about 6' tall and 200 pounds. The second suspect is described as a black teen boy with a light complexion and hazel eyes. Descriptions were not provided for the other two suspects.

The suspects are believed to be driving a Dodge Charger, either black or navy blue in color.

Anyone with information on the suspects or the incident is urged to contact police 313-267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
