Detroit Man Accused Of Unleashing Bulldog On Police Officer To Evade Arrest
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 36-year-old Detroit man is facing several charges after he allegedly unleashed his 100 pound bulldog on a police officer while trying to evade arrest, causing injury to the officer.
Darrel Campbell was arraigned Wednesday in 36th District Court on charges of dangerous animal causing serious injury, felonious assault, resisting and obstructing causing injury, and resisting and obstructing.
The charges stem from an incident that happened around 4:40 p.m. last Sunday in the 12600 block of Meyers, in a west side neighborhood near Grand River Avenue and I-96.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said police were investigating Campbell at a home in the area when it's alleged that Campbell left the house with a bulldog that he unleashed upon the officers while he attempted to flee the scene.
The dog bit one of the officers, although authorities haven't said how badly the officer was injured. Reports say he was briefly hospitalized.
Campbell was arrested later that day. It wasn't immediately clear why police were investigating him on the day of the incident.
The bulldog was euthanized on Tuesday, authorities said.
Campbell was ordered held on $50,000 bond. He's due back in court for a preliminary exam on Dec. 29.
