Rick Snyder Injures Achilles Tendon, Will Wear Cast For 6 Weeks

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has torn his right Achilles tendon and will be in a cast for six weeks.

The Republican governor told reporters Sunday that he felt a "pop" after jogging during a vacation in Florida. He's since visited doctors in Florida and Michigan.

Snyder says jogging is part of his Healthy Michigan initiative, but tells The Detroit News that he "overdid it." Spokeswoman Sara Wurfel said Snyder described the pain as "not horrible."

Wurfel told WWJ Newsradio 950 that it should be fully recovered in about 12 weeks.

"He's basically in a cast for about the next six weeks or so to keep the weight off of it," Wurfel said. "In about another six weeks (he'll wear) a boot. But it looks like, at this point, he'll hopefully rehabilitate it and there will be no surgery needed."

Michigan's chief executive has been mentioned as a potential 2016 presidential candidate and he typically deflects such talk without dismissing it outright. He was asked again on Sunday about running, and responded that he's "working on literal running first."

"Right now, basically, we're finding creative ways that we can do things so that he can be able to keep his calendar as much as possible," Wurfel said. "So, for instance, we just use a stool."

Snyder was at Detroit's Cobo Center, participating in a forum on U.S.-Chinese automotive issues.
