West Michigan Teen Killed, Hit By SUV Near Bus Stop

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) - A west Michigan high school student is dead after being hit by an SUV near a school bus stop Friday morning.

Lucas Vansprange, 15, was a freshman at Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids.

Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess said the accident happened right after Vansprange was dropped off by his father in the left-turn lane near Watermark Country Club in Cascade Township.

The teen ran behind the car and was attempting to cross the street to get to the bus stop when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

"Cascade Road is a very busy street in the eastern part of Grand Rapids; and it's probably a four or five-lane road with the left turn lane," Hess said.

"I believe the father saw it," he added. "There were other kids at the bus stop that were witnesses to the accident as well."

Vansprange was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.

Hess said an accident investigation is underway and it's still unknown if anyone will be charged.

Meantime, a crisis team including counselors and social workers will work with school officials to council students.
