Detroit Man Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter In Shooting Of 13-Year-Old Girl

DETROIT (WWJ) -  A Detroit man who owns the rifle used in the accidental fatal shooting of a 13-year-old girl has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Ivan Berrien, 45, is also charged with child abuse, possession of a firearm and felony firearm.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office, Berrien left his 14-year old son, the 13-year old girl and three other kids at the home — on Lappin Street near 7 Mile and Kelly — while he ran out to get pizza.

While Berrien was gone, police said, his son found the rifle in a bedroom and began playing with it. The loaded weapon fired, striking the girl. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the teens were babysitting the younger children, between the ages of five and seven, at the time of the incident, Tuesday afternoon.

Berrien is scheduled to be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. Friday in 36th District Court.

The victim's name has not been released.
