LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A state elevator inspector who likes to play golf is in the rough.

The attorney general's office filed fraud charges Thursday against Werner Noll after TV station WWMT found him golfing in Portage during work hours last summer. The 63-year-old Kalamazoo man has been an elevator inspector since 1998.

An investigation revealed that Noll allegedly used state time for personal activities in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for a total of 84 days and a cost to taxpayers of more than $8,000.  It's also alleged that Noll used a state vehicle during these personal activities.

"Scam artists who aim to take advantage of state resources will face justice," Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement.

Three charges of fraud have been filed in Lansing District Court. Messaged left with Noll's attorney, Chris Bergstrom, were not immediately returned.
