CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers announced Thursday afternoon that designated hitter Victor Martinez, whom the team signed to a four-year, $68 million deal this offseason, suffered an injury during workouts and is scheduled for surgery with Dr. James Andrews.

"Martinez injured his left knee last week during his off-season workout program," the Tigers organization stated in a press release. "He underwent an MRI and examination at the Watson Clinic yesterday which revealed Martinez suffered a torn medial meniscus in his left knee.

"He is scheduled for surgery Tuesday of next week with Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida," the release continued. "An additional update will be given at that time."

Martinez nearly won the American League batting title in 2014 with a .335 average. He also smacked 32 home runs and, thanks in part to 70 walks, recorded an American League-best .409 on-base percentage.

The left knee has been a problem for Martinez before; in 2012 he missed the entire season after tearing his ACL during offseason work.
