Detroit Mother Arrested In Death Of 2-Year-Old Boy

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son.

According to Police Chief James Craig, the toddler was found unresponsive at around 8:30 a.m. Friday at a home in the 5000-block of Sibinski Street on Detroit's east side.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Craig told WWJ's Chris Renwick they're treating this case as a homicide because there were signs on the child's body that force could have contributed to his death.

"Preliminary, the doctor saw some indications that it was not natural, so we followed up," said Craig. "We do have the mother in custody...The father is not in custody, and at this point in our investigation we have no issues with him."

Craig said investigators are still awaiting an official cause of death from the Wayne County Medical Examiner, which will not come for at least a few days.

While many facts aren't yet available, Craig said it will be important to bring closure to this case as their investigation continues.

"Very sad...it's always sad when we talk about a child, you know, and so it's troubling," Crag said.

No names were immediately released.
