CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has undergone successful medial menisectomy surgery on his left knee and will resume full activity in four to six weeks, the organization announced Tuesday.

The surgery, which was required after Martinez tore his medial meniscus during an offseason workout, was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida.

"We are very happy the surgery went well and that Victor will be ready to compete for the start of the 2015 season," Tigers general manager David Dombrowski stated in a press release.

The knee Martinez injured is the same one in which he suffered a torn ACL before the 2012 season. As a result, he missed that entire year. It took him approximately half the 2013 season to get back to form, but in the second half he could hardly be stopped, and he continued that momentum into 2014.

Last season Martinez nearly won the American League batting title, recording an average of .335. Martinez also smacked a career high of 32 home runs.

In November the Tigers signed Martinez, who was destined for free agency, to a four-year, $68 million extension.
