Man Faces Murder Charges In Stabbing Deaths Of Girlfriend, Daughter
EASTPOINTE (WWJ) - A man suspected of killing his 29-year-old girlfriend and infant daughter inside their Detroit-area home is now facing murder charges.
The bodies of Monique Rakowski and 13-month-old Carmon were discovered around 9 p.m. Thursday inside of a home in the 23000 block of Normandy, just north of 9 Mile Road between Gratiot Avenue and I-94 in Eastpointe.
Eastpointe Public Safety Director John McNeilance said Rakowski's 30-year-old live-in boyfriend gave himself up shortly before noon Friday.
"He did turn himself in to the Dearborn police at the Dearborn Police Department and was taken into custody there," McNeilance told WWJ's Jon Hewett. "He had some medical treatment that he had to undergo briefly at the hospital and then was released," into the custody of Eastpointe police.
The suspect is being held pending an arraignment, which is expected to take place Tuesday.
Investigators have yet to reveal a motive for the attack, but did say they had contact with both Rakowski and the suspect prior to the murders, which were discovered by Rakowski's father.
"He had gone there because he had tried to reach his daughter on the phone and could not contact her and became concerned," said McNeilance. "When he got to the house, he found his 29-year-old daughter and his 13-month-old granddaughter dead inside the house."
Investigators said Rakowski and her daughter had stab wounds, but it's not known whether those wounds caused their deaths.
The crime has unnerved residents on Normandy Street who didn't think something like this could happen so close to home.
"I was extremely worried about our safety because we have a 4-year-old daughter so, I mean, everything kind of got locked down," said Ricky Gutes, who lives two doors down from the crime scene.
Crystal Wilson, who lives across the street, shared the same feelings.
"Just the baby, like, that's unbelievable. That's really what's got me like 'Wow!' Like, how do you do that to a baby? Anybody, period — but the baby, that really touched me," she said.
