Man Charged In High-Speed Road Rage Chase That Ended In Accident On 1-94

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) -- A Detroit man has been charged with two felonies among other charges in a high-speed road rage chase that ended in an accident on I-94 in Roseville on Friday.

Steven Eugene Waters, 23, of Detroit was released from the hospital and brought to the Macomb County Jail on Saturday. Waters was arraigned by video on Monday and was granted a $100,000 cash or surety bond, 10 percent.

He was charged with two counts of felonious assault with a dangerous weapon, third-degree fleeing a police officer, operating while intoxicated, and second offense of driving while license is suspended.

Police got a call from a woman around 10 a.m. on Friday saying that she was riding in her vehicle with her husband on the freeway when they saw a silver Dodge Charger being driven recklessly and swerving. The caller told deputies that the driver of the Charger had "rammed" their pick-up truck.

Police advised the woman to have her husband exit the freeway at N. River Rd. to meet with Sheriff deputies, but the driver of the Charger followed them into a nearby Mobil gas station.

When police arrived, they found all three passengers of the two vehicles in the gas station parking lot. Deputies began to investigate the matter when the driver of the Charger got back into his vehicle and fled from the scene.

Police then pursued the driver as he went back onto the freeway and continued to flee eastbound for eight miles while going 90 miles per hour before he rear-ended a mini-van.

There were two women in the mini-van when they were struck by the Charger, but neither were injured. The driver of the Charger, Waters, was injured and deputies provided first-aid. He was eventually taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.

Two patrol cars incurred minor damage as a result of the incident. Waters is expected back in the same court on March 11 and remains in the Macomb County Jail.
