Missing Wayne State University Student Found Dead In Genesee County

OTISVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) - Michigan State Police have confirmed that a body found Thursday in a Genesee County pond is that of missing Wayne State University student Ken Gruno.

A concerned citizen spotted the body in Forest Township, just outside Otisville, about 70 miles north of Detroit,

"We had a neighbor call he 911 dispatch center at around 8:30 this morning; thought he saw a body in a pond at his neighbor's residence," said MSP Lt. Ryan Pennel.

He said there are no signs of foul play, although an investigation continues.

Gruno disappeared in Otisville where he'd been visiting with high school friends over Christmas break last December.

The Air Force veteran a credit card on him but left his coat behind when he stepped outside of the Otisville Hotel Bar — early in the morning of Dec.27 — telling friends he wanted to get some fresh air. Security camera video showed Gruno walking in the middle of Jefferson Ave. around 1 a.m. — but he was never seen or heard from again.

Firefighters had to use a boat and chip away at the ice to recover Gruno's body from the pond, that was still mostly frozen over.

An autopsy is planned for Friday.
