Detroit Police Arrest Suspected Serial Rapist; DNA Test Pending

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say police have arrested a man suspected of raping several women on Detroit's west side.

The suspect was taken into custody Friday night after police stopped a car that was seen leaving the site of a robbery.

Investigators say the driver of the car threw a gun out of the window; and there was a passenger in the back seat who was wearing the rape suspect's trademark black zipper mask. That passenger also matched the physical description of the serial rapist: a black male, around 5'10" tall with a stocky build and medium complexion.

The suspect has been ordered to submit to a DNA test. According to reports, he is a registered sex offender -- convicted of rape as a juvenile.

Police have been searching for the suspect since the attacks began in March. At least six women reported similar incidents to police: they were abducted and raped by an unknown, masked man.

In one case, police say, the man abducted a mother of seven at gunpoint as she was entering her home. Then, early Easter Sunday morning, police say a man fitting the same description abducted and raped an 18-year-old woman as she was getting into her car in the area of 7 Mile Road and Livernois.

An investigation is ongoing.
