DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Wayne County is exploring a sale of the Guardian Building, a downtown Detroit landmark that was acquired for county government in 2008.

Lloyd Jackson, a spokesman for County Executive Warren Evans, said officials are going to put the building up for sale to see if there's any interest.

"At the right price, the county will sell it," Jackson told the Detroit Free Press, declining to say that what price would be.

Evans, who was elected in November, is leading a troubled county government with poor finances and an unfinished jail that still is costing millions of dollars a month.

Under previous executive Robert Ficano, the county spent more than $50 million buying and renovating the 40-story Guardian Building, which opened in 1929. A private firm hired to look at county properties said the Guardian shouldn't have been purchased for its intended use as a government building.
