Two Students Removed From Berkley Middle School Over Alleged Hit List

BERKLEY (WWJ) - Two students have been removed from school in Berkley after officials discovered an alleged hit list of people they wanted to harm.

Officials say the situation unfolded on Friday, when a student at Anderson Middle School brought a fellow student's notebook to the principal's office. A spokesperson for the school said the notebook contained "some very troubling information," including a list of AMS students and staff that the student was upset with. It also contained a plan to potentially harm them.

The student who owned the notebook, and shortly thereafter a second student involved, were pulled from class as police were called in to investigate. School officials said both students told police they were only "joking around."

The students, who were detained by police, have been removed from school, pending the outcome of an investigation.

All students, parents and staff that were involved with the threat were notified by police and school administrators. A letter was also sent home with every student for their parents, informing them of the situation.

"We take our students' safety very seriously at Anderson Middle School," principal Michael Ross said in a statement. "We applaud the student who brought the notebook to an adult's attention. We encourage all children to contact an adult if they ever have reason to be fearful or become suspicious of anything in school."

Officials said school staff will be available to offer any help or support to any student who feels scared, anxious or threatened by the incident.

Police say an investigation is ongoing.
