Shane Greene Headed To Triple-A Toledo

CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Shane Greene has been sent down to Triple-A Toledo, the Tigers announced Friday.

Over the span of his last three starts, Greene has allowed 16 earned runs in nine innings. His ERA has ballooned to 5.82, which is 55th among American League pitchers.

The 26-year-old Greene started the season with a stellar stretch. In his first three appearances, he allowed just one earned run over 23 innings. He struggled in his next three outings, however, but appeared to get back on track in the three that followed. Then he apparently lost his form again.

After Greene's start on June 4, in which he allowed four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said the team had identified a mechanical adjustment that might help Greene, but evidently it did not help him enough.

"He's just not where he was when the season started," Ausmus said Wednesday night, after Greene surrendered five earned runs in three innings.

Ausmus would not discuss at that time whether the Tigers would consider sending Greene down.

The manager said he did not think the pitcher seemed less than confident when he went out to the mound in recent starts, but Greene, asked Wednesday where his confidence level was, responded, "Where do you think?"

The Tigers acquired Greene this offseason from the New York Yankees, for whom he started 14 games during the 2014 season. This is his second year in the major leagues.

The demotion of Greene is the corresponding move to the team's calling up left-handed reliever Ian Krol, a transaction the team announced Thursday afternoon.
