Man Fleeing Suspected Drug Deal Shot By Detroit Police Officer

DETROIT (WWJ) -- One suspect is recovering after being shot by a police officer in Detroit on Friday.

Police in street clothes were watching a suspected drug deal near Woodward and State Fair before they started to approach a pair of suspects in a nearby vehicle. Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt spoke with reporters about the incident later on Friday evening.

"They spotted what appeared to be two separate narcotics transactions," Dolunt said. "They attempted to stop the vehicle and investigate it -- they went about a block. The individual who was shot by the police jumped out of the car, had a handgun. We're unsure if he pointed it at, or was running and pointing it toward the officer. We have to look at the video more closely."

The officer fired four shots at the fleeing suspect, striking him once in the buttocks. The suspect was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive.

The suspect did not fire any shots at the officers.

The injured suspect has a criminal history, as well as warrants for traffic violations. The driver -- who was taken into custody -- has no criminal history.

Police are reviewing video footage from the officers' squad car, as well as from a nearby Sunoco gas station's security camera.
