Report: Detroit Tigers Confident They Can Resign Yoenis Cespedes This Winter

The Detroit Tigers elected to sell at the non-waiver trade deadline for the first time in ages on Friday. That included dealing outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to the New York Mets for minor league pitchers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa.

However, there have been rumblings that Cespedes and the Tigers could be reunited after the season even though the 29-year-old Cuban was traded. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported just after the trade on Friday that the Tigers still believe Cespedes could return for 2016 and beyond.

A report surfaced a week before the trade deadline saying that Cespedes told friends that even if he was traded this season, he would still want to come back to Detroit as a free agent in the offseason.

"Tigers left fielder Cespedes is telling friends that he wants to re-sign with the club – and that he would maintain that desire even if the Tigers traded him and he became a free agent," reported FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Cespedes is having a bounce-back season after spending time with the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox in 2014, batting .293 with 18 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .323 OBP.

The Tigers traded starting pitcher Rick Porcello to the Red Sox to acquire Cespedes and relief pitcher Alex Wilson during the 2014 Winter Meetings.
