Reward Offered For Tips In Hit-And-Run Death Of Nurse On Bicycle
MONTAGUE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP/WWJ) - A reward is being offered for tips to track down a driver who struck and killed a 50-year-old metro Detroit nurse and fled the scene.
Authorities say Susan Cummings of Lake Orion was participating in a group bicycle ride Saturday across Michigan's Lower Peninsula when she died in the hit-and-run crash.
Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler told The Muskegon Chronicle the 6:45 a.m crash happened in "an instant" on Fruitvale Road just east of Ochs Road in Montague Township.
Witnesses weren't able to get license plate information from the truck that hit her.
Roesler says the investigation was active on Monday and witnesses say a gray or silver pickup truck was involved. He says there's no doubt that the truck's driver knew someone or something had been hit.
Cummings, who worked as a Registered Nurse at Henry Ford Hospital, was with a large group of bicyclists riding from the Montague area to Bay City as part of "A One Day Ride Across Michigan." She died at the scene, according to Roesler.
Funeral services are set for Friday in Troy.
Anyone who can identify the at-fault driver or who has any information about the crash encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 231-724-6308 or Silent Observer at 231-72-CRIME. Tips can also be texted to 274637 with the prefix MKGTIP before the message.
Silent Observer is offering a reward of up to $1,000.
