5K 'Walk Like MADD' Fundraiser Looks To Work Toward Eliminating Drunk Driving

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Every two minutes throughout the United States, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash -- not including 200 child deaths in 2013.

Marsha Heimbach, who lives near Tecumseh, was waiting for her 12-year-old son Trevor to come back from spending the weekend with his father in July 2013 -- only he never made it.

"I went to a garage sale and I was on my way home and saw a bunch of wreckage just two miles from my doorstep," Heimbach said. "I ended up finding out that my ex-husband was three-times the legal limit and was driving 100 miles per hour."

The car rolled four times before coming to a stop, where Trevor was found dead on the scene.

"My little boy's neck was snapped almost immediately, so he didn't feel any pain, thank god," Heimbach said.

Heimbach is joining Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for a fundraising event at the Detroit Zoo on August 22. "Walk Like MADD" looks to eliminate drunk driving and spread awareness about the violent crime.

The 5k non-competitive walk begins at 8:30 a.m. (registration at 7 a.m.) and will conclude around 9:30 a.m.
