Boblo Boat Making Move To New Home In New York

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit excursion boat that ferried passengers to the defunct Boblo Island amusement park is on its way to its new home in New York.

Tug boats on Tuesday moved the SS Columbia from a shipyard in Toledo, where the 113-year-old boat has been the past year for repairs.

The nonprofit SS Columbia Project has spent years working on a multi-million-dollar plan to return the boat to service in the Hudson River Valley. Board member Ian Danic says: "It was spectacular watching the boat go out on the river again."

The boat is expected to arrive in Buffalo around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Columbia was launched in 1902. It ferried passengers to Boblo in the Detroit River for decades along with the SS Ste. Claire. The amusement park closed in 1993.
