Olga's Kitchen Abruptly Closes Downtown Store, Leaves Detroit In The Dust

DETROIT (WWJ) - Downtown Detroit is not a favorable location for at least one local business.

The Olga's Kitchen located at One Campus Martius announced Friday that is it closing its doors -- effective immediately.

The chain announced bankruptcy back in June, but had said that all of their locations would remain open. Olga's COO Michael Kosloski said they had to shutter the downtown location to help the overall health of the company.

"Closing the One Campus Martius location is a necessary next step for our company," said Kosloski. "We appreciate the support of our loyal guests in southeast Michigan who are the reason for our 45 successful years in business. We look forward to continuing to serve our local community at our other locations."

Bedrock Real Estate let the restaurant out of its lease early, said Dan Mullen, Executive Vice President of Bedrock.

"This move also opens up nearly 4,000 square feet of prime retail space in the heart of downtown Detroit's new emerging, one-of-a-kind urban shopping and dining district," said Mullen. "Several exciting operators have already expressed significant interest in this location and we expect to announce the final decision on a new tenant in the coming weeks."

All employees at the downtown store, which opened in April 2012, will have the opportunity to apply for current open positions at the remaining 26 metro Detroit Olga's locations.
