Detroit Teen Facing Murder Charge After Shooting, Police Standoff
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 17-year-old who was arrested after an hours-long police standoff is facing multiple charges in connection with the shooting death of a man on Detroit's west side.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Devin Simms is expected to be arraigned Thursday on charges of felony murder, carjacking, resisting and obstructing a police officer and felony firearm, in the death of 24-year-old Mylin Jenkins.
The charges stem from an incident that unfolded around 3:30 a.m. Monday in front of a home in the 16200 block of Steel Street, in a neighborhood just west of the Lodge Freeway along Puritan Avenue.
It's alleged that Jenkins was seated in the driver's seat of a car when he was fatally shot in the head by Simms, who was seated in the rear passenger portion of the car.
After the shooting, Simms allegedly removed Jenkins's body from the car and drove off.
Around 1 p.m. the same day, investigators working the case got a tip that led them to a home in the 20000 block of Ohio Street where Simms was hiding.
When officers arrived at the home, Simms barricaded himself inside and refused to come out -- sparking a police standoff. After more than two hours, Simms eventually surrendered to police and was taken into without further incident.
