2 Killed In Fire At West Michigan Apartment Complex

KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say two people are dead following a fire at an apartment complex in western Michigan.

Crews responded around 3 a.m. Friday at Wingate Apartments in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids.

Kentwood fire Chief Brent Looman tells The Grand Rapids Press they found heavy smoke and a small fire. He says a man in his 60s was dead near a bed in the apartment's living room and a woman in her 50s who used a wheelchair was dead in a bedroom.

Carol Carter awoke to the sound of a neighbor yelling about the fire and then banged on the door of the burning apartment herself, but got no response.

The fire was contained to a first-floor apartment. Names of those involved weren't immediately released. The cause is under investigation.
