Bad News About Bacon: New Study Shows Processed Meats Cause Cancer

DETROIT (WWJ) - You may want to think twice about consuming processed meats following some new findings by the World Health Organization.

The WHO report claims these foods — including bacon, sausage and ham — cause cancer.  More specifically: 50 grams of processed meat a day — which is less than two slices of bacon — increases the chance of developing colorectal cancer by almost 20 percent.

David Schwartz, a clinical dietitian at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, says he's not at all surprised by the study's findings.

But, worry not bacon lovers! Schwartz told WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites you don't have to give them up completely.

As usual, moderation is key.

"If you're eating processed meats regularly the take home message is to limit or cut down on them to really decrease your colorectal cancer risk," Schwartz said.

Meanwhile, the report finds that unprocessed red meats, such as steak and lamb shanks, are"probably carcinogenic" — but there was limited evidence.

For those out there who can't give up the meats, Schwartz recommends looking for grass-fed meats which contain conjugated linolenic acid, an omega 3, which works to fight inflammation.

Other important tips to lessen your cancer risk: Schwartz said limit how much alcohol you drink, don't smoke, and — most importantly — work on getting to and maintaining your ideal body weight.

Meantime, some meat industry groups are calling WHO's report is biased and misleading.
