FLINT, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A former Michigan teacher and Boy Scout leader convicted of killing his wife has been sent to prison for at least 50 years, a punishment that could keep the Flint-area man locked up until he dies.

Genesee County Judge Archie Hayman says Andrew Farley, Jr. had planned his wife's death over a long period. Tiffany Caine-Smith Farley was fatally stabbed at their Grand Blanc Township home on Oct. 26, 2014.

Evidence submitted at trial showed that Farley, 44, hit his 34-year-old wife over the head with a flashlight, knocking her to the floor while she was in the bathroom. Farley then proceeded to retrieve a knife from another room and came back and stabbed his wife six times, once in the heart.

Farley asked for mercy Monday, insisting he didn't intend to kill his wife. Defense attorney Ken Karasick said the stabbing was an "act of passion" after Farley's wife disclosed that she'd had an affair and then threatened to leave Farley.

Prosecutors and Farley had discussed the possibility of a plea agreement prior to trial, but prosecutors decided not to offer a plea after Caine-Smith Farley's family said they wanted the case to go to trial, prosecutors said.

Karasick said he will appeal the sentence, which was above the guidelines for second-degree murder. Farley won't be eligible for parole until he's in his 90s.

Police say Farley didn't call 911 after the stabbing.

Farley was a teacher at Grand Blanc Township-based Woodland Park Academy, a charter school, in the year prior to his wife's death.

The Boy Scouts of America previously listed Andrew Farley as the Cubmaster for Grand Blanc Pack 208, according to a report by MLive. His name has since been removed from the website.
