Customer Shoots Would-Be Robber Dead At Detroit Gas Station

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a customer turned the tables on a would-be robber during a hold-up at a Detroit gas station, fatally shooting the crook.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday at a Mobil gas station on 7 Mile Road and Meyers, on the city's west side.

The 29-year-old victim told police he was trying to buy cigarettes at the station's outside service window when the suspect approached and attempted to rob him. The man told police he pulled out a gun and shot the suspect several times.

Police say the suspect, a 23-year-old man, was killed in the shooting.

Investigators are now going over security footage from the station, which captured the shooting. Jay Jawad, a manager at the gas station, said it was just an ordinary night before bullets started flying.

"We just heard shots out and exactly what went on, I was told two guys went at it but I don't know what it was about," Jawad told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "The clerk on midnights, Mike, heard a couple shots out there, about six or seven shots I think."

The customer was questioned by police and his gun was seized. It's unclear at this time if he's still in custody, or if he's licensed to carry a weapon.

An investigation remains ongoing. Police say all findings will be turned over to the prosecutor's office, which will determine if any charges will be filed.
