Time Clock Troubles: Detroit Cops Ticked Off Over Proposal
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Some Detroit police officers are upset over a plan that would require them to punch time clocks at the beginning and end of their shifts.
Time clocks have been installed in city buildings and all city workers, including cops, will be expected to punch in at the start of their shifts and punch out at the end.
The plan, which is expected to start in March, is part of the city's efforts to modernize an antiquated payroll system while at the same time preventing cops from abusing overtime.
The time clock requirement was recommended by auditing firm Ernst & Young during the city's bankruptcy, according to a report in the Detroit News.
Many police officers are not happy, saying the time clock requirement doesn't make sense because cops work strange hours and many go straight to crime scenes or court appearances from their homes.
Detroit human resources director Denise Starr told the newspaper that details of how the time clock system would work for officers are being finalized.
