State Senator Virgil Smith Takes Plea Deal, Agrees To Resign In Domestic Assault Case
DETROIT (WWJ) - It appears State Senator Virgil Smith will resign his position and serve jail time is part of a plea deal in a domestic violence case.
Prosecutors said Thursday an agreement was reached in the case involving a shooting incident last year.
If the judge accepts the plea, Smith will serve ten month behind bars and will give up his Senate seat.
Smith, 36, was arrested last Spring at his Detroit home after allegedly assaulting his ex-wife and shooting up her Mercedes-Benz. He's accused of firing as many as ten shots the car in what police say was a domestic dispute, also involving a second woman, early Mother's Day morning.
Smith is pleading guilty to one count of malicious destruction of property over $20,000. In return, prosecutors will drop several other charges including felonious assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, domestic violence assault and battery.
Smith is a Democrat, representing Michigan's fourth senate district, including portions of Downriver and Detroit.
Sentencing is set for March 14.
