University To Give Students Break From Early-Morning Classes

SAULT STE. MARIE (AP) - A university in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is giving nearly all students an extra hour in the mornings by no longer teaching classes from 8 to 9 a.m.

The Evening News reported Monday that the change is being made by Lake Superior State University. Interim Provost David Finley said in a recent board of trustees meeting that the idea is to make it easier for faculty and administrators to schedule meetings, and to give students more time to study, meet with instructors or do extracurricular activities.

Finley said some instruction, such as nursing clinicals, will still have to take place during that hour.

University President Tom Pleger said the Sault Ste. Marie school will try the change for a semester or a year and "see how it goes."
