Northern Michigan Sheriff Using Private Money To Put 'In God We Trust' On Patrol Cars

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mich (WWJ) -- A motto commonly seen on U.S. currency is turning up on some northern Michigan patrol vehicles.

Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield has added "In God We Trust" to five of his deputies' vehicles this week.

"It's just the right thing to do," Wakefield told WWJ Newsradio 950. "There is so much negativity going on in our country today -- the flag, 'In God We Trust,' prayer -- all kinds of things. Come on, folks, these are the grassroots of our country."

Wakefield is personally paying for the decals to be put on the cars. A local church has also donated $100 to help defray the cost.

"I'm the sheriff and I decided to do it -- I did it," Wakefield said. "I got thinking about it and I said 'you know, it's on our currency, it's on letterhead-- it's everywhere. Why don't we put that on our patrol cars.'"

The sheriff says he hasn't heard one word of criticism.
