The Snack Attack: Hardee's New Midnight Moonshine Burger Is Deceiving... But Delicious

When I first heard about Hardee's new Midnight Moonshine Thickburger, I stopped right in my tracks and thought, "I need to go to there."

According to Hardee's, the Midnight Moonshine Burger is a charbroiled, 100 percent Black Angus beef patty topped with the sweet burn of Midnight Moon Moonshine glaze, pepper-Jack cheese, crispy garlic-pepper onion straws and thick-cut, Applewood-smoked bacon.

Hardee's, and more over Carl's Jr., is known for their edgy advertising that shows beautiful models and actresses trying to stuff the gigantic fast-food burgers into their mouths.

The promo images alone for the Midnight Moonshine Burger are enough to make your mouth water, which I guess is my biggest problem with the whole thing -- because when you actually get the burger, it looks nothing like advertised.

I'm not saying I actually expected my burger to look like the promotional image, but shouldn't it at least be close? The saving grace of this burger is that despite its unappealing looks, it actually is absolutely delicious.

Review: Hardee's Midnight Moonshine Thickburger

Appearance: I actually thought the employee brought me the wrong burger. If it wasn't for the Midnight Moonshine sticker on the wrapper, I might have even asked just to make sure -- that's how underwhelming it looks. While promos for the burger show the moonshine glaze dripping off the burger, I practically needed a magnifying glass to find the sauce on mine.

Aroma: I thought the smell of the fried onions was really going to turn me off, but I couldn't smell them at all. The moonshine glaze lends some sweet scents to the overall aroma, but it pretty much just smells like a burger.

Taste: The first few bites were just average until I finally hit some of that moonshine glaze. I was expecting a smoky, mesquite flavor but instead I tasted a sauce slightly reminiscent of sweet teriyaki. I know that sounds weird, but it really was like an Asian-inspired barbeque sauce. I only wish my burger had more of it because it was delicious! The onion straws don't really taste like onions, which was sort of disappointing because I love fried onions. These reminded me of the French's fried onions that mom puts on green bean casserole.

Pros: A big, juicy burger sure to fill you up. The sauce is AMAZING!!

Cons: There was hardly any sauce -- the main ingredient that makes this burger different from the rest. If you're expecting your burger to look like the one on TV, you're going to be disappointed.

Rating: 8 out of 10 -- Despite its looks, this burger is freaking delicious.
