2 Kids Thrown From Car In Head-On Crash: 1 Dead, 1 Critical, 'Speeding' Driver Under Arrest

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a young child is dead and another is hospitalized in critical condition after they were thrown from a vehicle during a head-on crash on Detroit's west side.

The accident happened late Thursday night on Whitemore and Manderson roads, in a neighborhood along McNichols Road just west of Woodward Avenue.

Police tell WWJ a Chevy Impala carrying a 6-year-old boy, 2-year-old girl, 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man was traveling on Whitemore when it was broadsided by a "speeding" Chevy Camaro that ran a stop sign on Manderson. The impact of the crash sent the Impala into another vehicle.

Both children were ejected from the Impala. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where the boy was pronounced dead. The girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The Impala was so mangled, first responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the man and woman from the vehicle. Both were taken to a hospital. The woman and children's mother, who was driving, is in stable condition, while the man is in serious condition.

The driver of the Camaro, a 20-year-old man, was also injured in the crash. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police say the man is also under arrest. We could find out later Friday what charges he's facing.

Names of those involved have not yet been released.

The crash remains under investigation.
